REMINDER - Free Testing at Community Testing Sites & Insurance Reimbursements for At-Home Tests: Due to a lack of funding, the federal government’s Health Resources and Services Administration recently announced that its COVID-19 Uninsured Program will no longer accept claims for reimbursement of costs associated with administering COVID-19 tests or vaccines to uninsured and underinsured individuals. There are many cost-free ways to get tested. Find a free COVID-19 Community Testing Site in Winnebago County, or visit the DHS webpage to find free community testing sites across the state. In addition, private insurers, Medicaid (BadgerCare), and Medicare all must reimburse up to 8 at-home COVID-19 tests per member, each month. You can also get up to 8 free tests here. How To Keep Your Child Younger Than 5 Healthy Until They are Eligible for a COVID-19 Vaccine: We are at a very different place than we were a year ago with vaccines, tests, and treatments and with more knowledge about how to keep ourselves and our communities safe. But the virus is still with us, and there are still people ineligible for vaccination—specifically, children under 5 years old. It can be a frustrating time for parents of kids in this age group as they wait to find out if COVID-19 vaccines will be made available to them. But we have tips for how to keep kids happy and healthy in the meantime:
-
Focus on preventative care and wellness: Keep up with your regular pediatric visits. Recommendations vary per age group, so check with your pediatrician if you're not sure when your child is due for their next wellness check-up. If you need assistance finding vaccine services, please contact our staff. Learn more about the Vaccines for Children Program as your child may be eligible to receive their childhood vaccines free of charge.
-
Talk to your pediatrician about the COVID-19 vaccine (and other shots): Your pediatrician will have the most accurate information as it becomes available about vaccine recommendations for this age group. Once the COVID vaccine is available, most pediatricians will be able to give the vaccine in their offices. Also, be sure to check www.wcvaccine.org for information on community clinics in your area. Be sure to check in on other routine vaccinations, which may have fallen off schedule during the pandemic. Many states have certain requirements for kids entering pre-K and kindergarten. Appointments can fill up quickly, so it is best to be proactive.
-
Re-Thinking What's Safe: As community COVID risks decline in many areas, some parents are eager to plan activities and playdates for their kids. These social interactions, as well as physical activity, are especially important for this age group. Remember: outside is still the safest option for unvaccinated children. Masking and/or rapid tests can help decrease uncertainty, which is especially important if your child or another family member is immunocompromised or vulnerable to severe illness.
-
Be Open with Your Child: Though many folks are feeling relieved as community COVID risks starts to drop, decision-making about how to approach mitigation can still be stressful, especially when it involves big changes to your daily routine. Kids can be sensitive to these changes. Talk with your child about how they are feeling and provide consistent love and support.
